The Walls of 5 Maroon

Cupcake time!

5 Maroon love an excuse to have a pre-recess sing-a-long and a reason to celebrate. Today we celebrated Dylan's 11th Birthday with some cupcakes.

Happy Birthday Dylan!

Here are some members of 5 Maroon enjoying their cupcakes and hamming it up for the camera.

Homework News

A note was sent home last Friday regarding this week's homework task.

As one clever 5M student commented today, it is actually due on Monday the 28th rather than the 27th.

Here is a copy of the note and the rubric.

Dear Parents and Friends,

In lieu of Go Maths homework next week, students will have a take home assessment task to complete. This task marks the culmination of our Science and Technology Unit on the Solar System.

Students are to create a database related to planets in the Solar System. The database is simply an organised collection of information on the planets of the Solar System. Each planet must be included.

Students have full creativity in terms of how they present this assessment. Databases may be presented in the form of a poster, a website, a book, a pamphlet or PowerPoint Presentation. Students who do not have access to the internet or a computer are not at a disadvantage.

Students must have their database due on the following date.

Monday 27th May

As per usual with homework if there is a reasonable excuse for not having the assessment ready on the due date, there must be a note from their parent. All students need to have this assessment done; a note does not excuse them from the task but from handing it in on time.

I have included a marking rubric so you are aware of the expectations of the task if your child needs any guidance.

As always, if you have any questions or queries do not hesitate to contact me via a note with your child or phone message at the office. I am also contactable on my email address: amy.mead@mn.catholic.edu.au

Kind regards,

Amy Mead
Year 5 Maroon Teacher

Weeks 3 and 4

The past two weeks have flown by in 5 Maroon with Mothers Day activities, an inservice day and NAPLAN.

5 Maroon took NAPLAN in their stride and approached the examinations in a calm manner. Miss Mead was very impressed by their confidence and resilience.

The Writing task for NAPLAN asked students to present their opinion/s on the topic 'people should know how to cook'. Judging from our discussion after the exam there may be some budding cooks in 5M.

There has been lots of work on our new units. Rainforests for HSIE, Australian Artists (e.g. Sidney Nolan and Julian Ashton) in Creative and Performing Arts, Descriptive Texts in English. We finished our Rapunzel unit in CAPA and are on our way to completing our Easter unit in Religion.
Subtraction has been our focus in Maths this week.

Week 3 award winners:

Molly was our Student of the Week for having an excellent attitude to all she does and taking pride in her work.

Our class award winners were recognised for the following:
  • Setting a great example to his peers with his great attitude
  • An enthusiastic attitude to all she does
  • Excellent work in reading groups, her responses are fantastic.
Week 4 Award Winners

Our student of the week was Amelia, she was recognised for her excellent performance in drama and her positive attitude.

Dylan received the Principal's Award for putting his best into all he does.
Our Merit Award recipients were recognised for:

  • Being ready to learn and excellent work in drama performance

It is only Tuesday and Miss Mead already has students in mind for her awards. It will be hard to narrow the recipients down.

Spelling

Spelling words are the same as last week's. All students will attempt 20 words.

Don't forget to practise. These words will also help you with creating powerfully persuasive texts.

Week 2

Five Maroon had a great week in Week 2 and are off to a great start for Week 3.

Last week we focused on Measurement in Mathematics, we looked at perimeter, area and briefly, volume. We are still working on persuasive texts before our NAPLAN tests next week.

We farewelled our Bali unit with some excellent travel brochures. Our next HSIE unit is Rainforests.

We are excited to start our Creative Arts Unit called 'Shovels, Picks and Pans', this unit looks at Australian artists such as Sidney Nolan.

It was great to see so many parents and relatives in our classroom on Thursday for Catholic Schools Week. The children really enjoyed sharing their work with you. There will be photos of our classroom walls posted in the next week.

You may have noticed some local celebrities in this week's Maitland Mercury and Newcastle Herald. 5 Maroon were promoting technology in our new library and Lewis was mentioned in the Newcastle Herald for his sporting talent.

Our class award winners were Isabella (Excellent response in Religion and taking pride in her work), Emily D (Beautifully presented work and taking pride in all she does), Jessica (Being a helpful young lady and trying her best to be a respectful member of 5 Maroon). Dylan was Student of the Week. Brock was awarded the Principal's Award and Lewis received an award for participating in a Rugby League event. Here are our award winners hamming it up for the camera. Congratulations and well done on your efforts this week, you should be very proud.

Have a lovely week.
